In Baoshan District, Shanghai, a public toilet has impressed with its technology and ambiance.

Upon entering, visitors are greeted by green plants. A "third bathroom" is designated inside the building, which includes facilities specially designed for the handicapped and children.

A sensor system is in use in case these vulnerable groups are in need of help.

"If someone stays inside longer than 18 minutes, the alarm will sound off and staff will rush to check," said a keeper of the toilet.

Information regarding temperature, humidity and availability of the bathroom is also displayed on an electronic screen.

China has had an unwelcome reputation for poor-quality public toilets in the past, but authorities have been working to improve the situation. The campaign has been dubbed a "toilet revolution".
