He Yuhong, 19, clocked 10.18 seconds in the men's 100m in southwestern China's Chengdu on Friday, and the mark was recognized as a new national youth record on Saturday.
He also refreshed his personal best, thus becoming the sixth active Chinese sprinter to finish the distance in 10.20 seconds.
The former record of 10.26 seconds was set 34 years ago by Li Tao, a senior coach of the Chinese track and field team now.
"The result has surprised me. It is both pressure and motivation. I will try to keep fit to improve in the future," He said.
