Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab on Saturday called for early parliamentary elections, saying he would propose a relevant draft law on Monday, al-Jadeed TV channel reported.

"The country cannot overcome its current crisis without early parliamentary elections," Diab said in a televised address to the nation.

He also expressed support for the Lebanese people's demand for reform in the country.

Urging all officials to work together in the coming period of time, Diab said he would allow two more months until reforms are agreed on.

On Saturday afternoon, thousands took to streets in downtown Beirut in anti-government protests that demand the overhaul of the political system, days after massive explosions rocked the Lebanese capital that killed at least 158 and injured 6,000 others.

Primary information reveals that ammonium nitrate that has been stored in the warehouse at Port of Beirut since 2014 may have caused the deadly explosions.
