G7 summit leaders in Sicily have failed to agree on climate change, as US President Donald Trump says he will withdraw the US from the landmark Paris climate accord that seeks to stem the effects of global warming.
The rift is one of several emerging disagreements between the US president and other world leaders. The Paris Agreement aims to limit temperature increases by only 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. To remain in the deal, the US must cut its emissions by 26 percent by 2025.
German chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian prime minister Paolo Gentiloni hoped to use the summit to convince him to adjust or soften some of his stances.
Review of Trump's stance on climate change
Trump's views on climate change have always attracted attention worldwide and his policies on such issue have been evolving since he took office in January. During his presidential campaign, he slammed the Paris Agreement.
In March, the US president announced plans to reexamine the tougher fuel efficiency standards for vehicles enacted by the Obama administration. Later, Trump signed an executive order gutting many of Obama's climate policies, including the Clean Power Plan.
