Two Indian troops and a civilian were killed in a gunfight between security forces and militants in northeastern state of Manipur Wednesday, police said.

The incident took place in a desolate area between Sajik and Tamol villages in the state's Chandel district, some 60 km from Manipur's capital Imphal.

"The gunfight began when militants opened fire on an Assam Rifles regiment who were conducting a search operation in the area, following an intelligence tip-off," a police official said.

While two security forces personnel and a civilian caught in the cross-fire have been killed in the incident, one militant is also said to have sustained fatal injuries, he said.
