The legacy of 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympicsshall not be limited to sports, but extend to a range of areas including the economy, society, culture, environment as well as urban and regional development, officials from the organizing committee of the Games said on Wednesday at the release of a special report on the legacy being left behind the Games since the country won the bid to host them in 2015.

An official said that winter sports have been gaining popularity in China because of the Games.

"The most important legacy is to help some 300 million people get close to and participate in the winter sports," said Ni Huizhong, vice president of the Chinese Olympic Committee.

So far, there are over 650 rinks and over 800 ski resorts nationwide. They've increased by 317 percent and 41 percent, respectively, compared with 2015.

As for winter sports lovers, at least 200,000 disabled people have taken part in such activities. They and many others have also benefited.

"Accessible facilities for these people have been greatly increased in sectors like transportation, public services and information communication. These will leave valuable legacies," said Wang Meimei, vice president of China Disabled Persons' Federation.

The International Olympic Committee says Beijing 2022 is taking clear steps on sustainability.

"Beijing 2022 is also taking noticeable steps on sustainability. Natural, low emission CO2 refrigeration systems will be used at some of the ice venues for the first time in China and at the Olympic Winter Games," said Chair of Coordination Commission of 2022 Winter Games Juan Antonio Samaranch.

"All these achievements are clearly laid out in the Beijing 2022 Legacy Report," he said.

The 25 competition or non-competition venues have become further legacies left by the Beijing 2008 Summer Games.

"The system will not only let the people feel its benefits during the Games, but also after the Games," said Ni.

Moreover, officials said the report will be followed by a series of other legacy reports and case studies. The aim is to give a full picture of the Olympic legacies created by the Beijing 2022 Games.
