A teenager was killed after a bullet hit him during a search operation launched by government forces in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said Wednesday.

The 18-year-old boy Adil Farooq was killed late Tuesday evening at Ganawpora village of Shopian district, about 56 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

Police said a joint contingent of paramilitary and army had gone to the village to nab militants present there.

"Security forces cordoned off some houses on a specific input regarding the presence of militants at Ganawpora in Shopian district this evening. During the search operation an unruly mob started heavy stone pelting on the forces and also a brief exchange of fire took place," a police spokesman said.

"One person from Ganawpora was brought to district hospital Shopian with bullet wound and he subsequently succumbed."

According to villagers, Farooq was a Class 12 student.

Locals said Farooq was wounded when government forces opened fire on them.

Reports said no sooner the forces were cordoning the village, people took to streets and obstruct their operation against militants.

Farooq's killing triggered protests in the area, which continued until late in night.

Authorities fearing clashes in the region blocked internet services on the mobile phones in a bid to prevent youth from organising protests.
