A minority provincial lawmaker has been shot dead in Pakistan's northwest, police said.

Sikh legislator, Sardar Soran Singh, was gunned down on Friday in Buner district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on his way to home, said Mir Ghazab, a police officer.

Slain Sijngh belonged to the ruling Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf party in the province.

He was also the special assistant to the provincial chief minister on minorities affairs.

The gunmen riding a motorcycle fired at Soran Singh, seriously injuring him. He later died of wounds in a local hospital.

The gunmen fled and no group claimed responsibility. Police said they are investigating motives behind the incident.

Imran Khan, the PTI chief, and political leaders condemned the murder.

Afrasiab Khattak, an opposition leader, said the killing of the lawmaker shows "terrorists can still strike" in the region.
