G20 lawmakers eye bigger role in economic recovery

Top lawmakers from the Group of 20 (G20) members called for a bigger role for legislature in promoting economic recovery as they concluded a two-day forum here Friday.

"We (legislators) will work collectively to strengthen our economies and restore the confidence of our constituencies," Canadian Senate Speaker Noel Kinsella told the closing ceremony.

The effort made should be able to "support growth, promotes financial stability and create high-quality jobs and opportunities for all our citizens," said Kinsella.

A wide range of consensus has been reached at the forum, covering topics such as economic recovery, financial reform, he fight against corruption, food security, climate change, water management and energy generation.

The G20 Speakers' Consultation Forum, now in its fourth year, has become an integral part of the G20 consultation mechanism and Mexico will continue to make the forum a proper platform for inter-parliament exchanges between G20 members.

The previous three such forums were held respectively in Canada's Ottawa, South Korea's Seoul and Saudi Arabia's Riyadh.
