JAKARTA, Dec. 19 (APD) – A senior official at Indonesia Industry Ministry said on Wednesday that German carmaker Volkswagen (VW) planned to open a production facility in the country.

“VW would open an assembly line in Indonesia with investment allocation of up to 50 million Euro, to manufacture the Tiguan model,” Director General of Transportation Metal Machinery and Electronics at the ministry Harjanto said.

The VW production facility in Indonesia would be managed by VW’s local partner of PT Garuda Mataram, he added.

VW has filed in its report over the plan to open production facility to the ministry, he said.

Besides the Tiguan model, which he said of projected for export to countries in the region, VW would also produce several models for Indonesian market.

Cited the amount of the planned investment at 50 million Euro, he estimated that the facility’s production capacity would not be that big.

Indonesia hosts production facilities of prominent European and Asian carmakers for domestic market as well as for exports to Asia, Africa and South American countries.

Thanks to its positive economic growth at an average of around 5 percent per year, the Southeast Asia’s largest economy is apparently the largest automotive market in the region.

Its car sales record in 2017 was 1.1 million units, or 33 percent from overall cars sold in the 10 ASEAN countries in the year.
