Indonesia seeks higher creative economy contribution to GDP

JAKARTA, Feb. 27 (APD) — As the nation continued to see increasing proceeds from its creative economy sector, Indonesia set a contribution target of up to 1,000 trillion rupiah (about 73.1 billion U.S. Dollars) to the nation’s Gross Domestic Products (GDP) this year.

The target was conveyed by Head of Indonesia’s Creative Economy Agency (Bekraf) Triawan Munaf in a session held here on Tuesday.

Triawan said the target was achievable since the proceeds generated in the sector has grown up to 80 trillion rupiah (about 5.8 billion U.S. Dollars) each year.

Proceeds in the sector was recorded at 922.59 trillion rupiah (about 67.4 billion U.S. Dollars) and 852.56 trillion rupiah (about 62.3 billion U.S. Dollars) in 2016 and 2015 respectively, he said.

He added that the target for this year would make the sector contribute 7.44 percent to the total GDP, higher than 7.38 percent last year.

Citing to the apparent expansion in the sector, Triawan said that moviegoers watching domestic movies have surged significantly from 16 million in 2015 to 42.7 million ones at present.

“Thanks to higher quality movies and technologies applied in domestic film industry that led to this far,” he said.

Echoing Triawan illustration on the surge of film industry in creative economy sector, Head of Indonesia’s Central Statistics Bureau (BPS) Suhariyanto said that the film making sub sector was apparently part of major driver in the sector.

Suhariyanto said that production of animated film, videos, visual communications media and games apps have showed tremendous growth in 2016. He added that business in the sub sector remained vibrant, promises great potentialities for national creative economy sector in the future.

According to Suhariyanto, who was in the occasion, drivers of Indonesia’s creative economy were culinary, fashion and handicraft sub sectors.

Suhariyanto said that culinary contributed the most at 41.40 percent to national creative economy sector in 2016. Meanwhile the fashion and handicraft sub sector contributed 18.1 and 15. percent respectively in the year.

Indonesia’s creative economy sector was generated by 8.2 million firms operating in the country at present, in which 20 percent of those firms were apparently startups initiated by the nation’s millennial generations, according to the BPS data.
