NEW DELHI, Jan. 3 (APD) - According to Delhi Police data, on average pickpockets robbed around 35 passengers travelling in the Delhi metro every day in the year 2017.
The articles stolen were usually small items like wallets, cell phones and small bags. A total of 12,854 crime cases were reported in 2017 from the Delhi Metro premises, marking a 33% rise from last year.
In 2016, 9,621 cases were reported. However since last year the metro stations as well as passenger load, both have increased.
According to a Hindustan Times report, in the last five years, a 13-fold jump in crime on the Delhi Metro premises has taken place, while the riders have increased from 1.92 million a day in 2012-13 to 2.76 million in 2016-17.
A Central Industrial Security Force report published in June 2016 highlights that women’s gangs are responsible for more than 90% of theft cases in the metro. Further a police official clarified that the culprits were well educated and difficult to profile.
Reportedly, 57 vehicles were stolen from metro parking lots in 2017 while 31 such incidents were reported last year.
Sanjay Baniwal, the special commissioner of police at the metro, said, “More complaints mean that more people are making use of our free-and-fair registration initiative. The availability of e-reports even allows commuters to file their cases online.”
