Several Taliban gunmen and suicide bombers on Monday morning seized a building in a residential area at the northern edged of Kabul International Airport and launched firing and rocket propelled grenade (RPG) attack against the airport and the nearby U.S. and Afghan army military compound, police and eyewitnesses said.

"Eight or 10 militants held a five-story under-construction building in Global, a residential area where most of the buildings are unfinished in Qasaba locality. More than 15 RPGs were fired on military part of the airport where U.S. and NATO forces are stationed," an eyewitness Mohammad Wasim told Xinhua, adding the attack began at around 4:30 a.m. local time.

He said the gunfight is still going on in the area. The Kabul airport suspended all fights following the attack.

"So far one militant is killed. The counter-attack is going on. The police forces safely detonated a car bomb parked near the scene and the situation is under control," police chief of Kabul Mohammad Ayub Salangi told local media.

Military helicopters of the Afghan army and the NATO-led forces are hovering over the area to monitor the situation.

Local TV channel shows several Afghan army and police military vehicles firing on the building. It was not clear at the moment whether the attack cause any death.

The Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since the militant group launched an annual rebel offensive late last month against Afghan government forces and about 100,000 NATO-led troops stationed in the country.

The Taliban also urged civilians to stay away from official gatherings, military convoys and centers regarded as the legitimate targets by militants besides warning people not to support the government and foreign troops.
