China's topping the class when it comes to higher education

Universities from China and Singapore dominated the top five of Times Higher Education's first Asia-Pacific University ranking.

Australia's University of Melbourne is ranked third. The other four universities are Singapore's National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University (first and fifth places, respectively) and China's Peking University and Tsinghua University (in second and fourth place, respectively).

Japan is the most-represented nation with 69 universities featured. China is in second place with 52 universities. Other countries with a strong presence in the ranking are Australia (35 universities), South Korea (25) and Thailand (9). Taiwan, a southeast China island region, has 26 universities on the list.

The Asia-Pacific University Ranking evaluated universities across 38 nations and regions in East Asia, Southeast Asia and Oceania.

The overall ranking featured just over 200 universities from 13 different nations and regions.
