With an eye on spreading the charms of Japanese culture ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, the government has unveiled a logo to be displayed by those involved in the pursuit.

The logo, announced on Jan. 27, promotes the Beyond 2020 program.

Local governments, private companies and other organizations will be allowed to carry it after they are certified by the government as a promoter of Japanese culture, an inclusive society or global communication.

The certified entities, whose activities will be part of the Beyond 2020 effort, will not be charged a royalty to use the logo.

The newly selected logo, which represents the government's Beyond 2020 program.

“I designed the logo with the motif of gestures expressing the ‘good,’ ” said Miko Sugawara, who submitted the winning entry, during the awards ceremony in Tokyo.

“The mark also looks like the alphabet ‘b,’ the initial letter of ‘beyond,’ as well as the hiragana ‘wa,’ which symbolizes Japan,” added Sugawara, who is a junior at the Yokohama College of Art and Design.

“Wa” in Japanese means “peace” or “harmonization,” and also is part of the ancient country named Yamato when written with the kanji character.

“I put my hope into the logo that it will help spread Japanese culture,” Sugawara added.

Her entry topped three finalists selected from 39 submitted entries designed by students enrolled in artistic colleges nationwide.
