Tokyo shares end higher on weaker yen

Tokyo shares ended higher on Monday as sentiment here was lifted by gains on Wall Street last weekend and a weaker yen.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 80.78 points, or 0.50 percent, from Friday to 16,310.64.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 5.35 points, or 0.40 percent, at 1,337. 30.

Gainers were led by machinery, construction and metal products issues.

The turnover was about 1,799.4 billion yen (about 16.45 billion U.S. dollars).
