Amid violence and threats to attack from Taliban, elections were conducted in Afghanistan on Saturday. While many came out to cast their votes, the general voter turn out was low.

According to a report published in the Reuters there was one death during the polls, the report said, “The election was marred by numerous small-scale Taliban attacks, but only one confirmed death.”

“However, turnout was low, and the violence, plus the Taliban’s earlier threats to attack polling stations, may be a major reason,” it further said.

There are about twelve candidates, who are contesting for the post of President. Current President Ashraf Ghani and his deputy Abdullah Abdullah are leading the race.

In Afghanistan there are more than 9 million registered voters. However, in the situation of fear not all voters could cast their vote.

Earlier several people were killed in US drone attacks in the hills of Afghanistan when they had gone to harvest pine nuts. The episode had caused antipathy against the US across the country.
