An Israel Defense Force (IDF) officer was lightly wounded Tuesday by gunfire from across the Israeli-Syrian border, a spokesperson with the Israeli military said in a statement.

Little context was given about the incident but the spokesperson said that the force came under fire "during a routine activity" in the annexed Golan Heights.

Israel Radio added that the shots were fired as an engineering corps team approached the border in order to evacuate a bulldozer that was stuck.

A military source told Israel's Channel 2 TV that the shootings were not spillover from the ongoing fighting between rebels and loyalists to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

However, there was no immediate Israeli retaliation for the incident.

Last June, Israeli warplanes raided Syrian military positions, in an incident which claimed the lives of at least ten Syrian soldiers.

The border has been kept rather quiet since then, except sporadic shootings, mainly errant fire from the war. Enditem
