Manchester City missed the chance of entering the last four of Champions League again after Lyon shocked Pep Guardiola's side by 3-1 in their quarter-final match in Lisbon on Saturday.

Guardiola, who received both accolades and doubts regarding his approach to games, set up a three-man defensive system in the center, but left creative minds on the bench, which happened to work for the other side.

City created little in the first half and were caught out by a long ball over the top as Lyon took the lead in the 24th minute.

City's equalizer happened when Mahrez clipped a ball forward towards Sterling and he cut it back from the byline to De Bruyne, the Belgian arriving unmarked at the edge of the box to sidefoot home first-time.

However, Moussa Dembele came off the bench to score two late goals for Lyon, forcing a third consecutive exit in the quarter-finals from the City.

The last four of this year's Champions League are made up of French and German clubs. Clubs from top-flight English, Italian and Spanish leagues have all been eliminated.

A day after Bayern's 8-2 demolition of Barcelona, this is a seismic shock and a hammer blow to the ambitions of City under Guardiola. Their wait for European glory will go on.

Against all expectations, a team who finished seventh in the curtailed French season, and had played just two competitive games since early March, now find themselves through to a Champions League semi-final.
