China's Shanghai has donated a batch of anti-epidemic materials to Lao capital Vientiane to help fight against the COVID-19 outbreak.

During a handover ceremony held on Tuesday in Vientiane, Chinese Ambassador to Laos Jiang Zaidong said Laos has offered sincere help to China at the critical moment in China's fight against the COVID-19 epidemic, and China is ready to offer a helping hand when Laos is faced with difficulties.

Shanghai held a video exchange with the Lao side on the prevention and control of the epidemic on April 13, followed by a batch of anti-epidemic materials donated by Shanghai on Tuesday, Jiang noted, adding that some other local governments and enterprises in China have also been actively contributing to the prevention and control of the epidemic in Laos.

Sinlavong Khoutphaythoune, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, secretary of the Vientiane city committee and mayor of Vientiane, said at the difficult time of the epidemic prevention and control in Laos, China not only sent a team of medical experts, but also provided timely assistance with multiple batches of epidemic prevention materials, adding that China has been playing a key role in the COVID-19 prevention and control in Laos.

The valuable assistance from China will greatly improve the ability of Laos to prevent and control the disease, said Sinlavong, adding, "We will definitely make full and effective use of the materials to achieve real and practical results."

As of Wednesday morning, Laos has detected 19 confirmed COVID-19 cases, while two patients have recovered and were discharged from the hospital.
