Deputies to the 12th National People's Congress on Monday elected the Congress presidium and set the agenda for the legislative session, to open on Tuesday.It's the first time for the new NPC deputies, elected earlier this year, to gather in Beijing for the annual session of the national legislature.

The preparatory meeting for the first session of the 12th National People's Congress was held in Beijing on Monday morning.

During the meeting, NPC deputies elected a 178-member presidium and secretary-general to take charge of the session and set the law-making agenda.

According to the congress protocol, deputies - including hundreds of migrant workers and farmers - will elect the chairman and vice chairpersons of the 12th NPC Standing Committee...

As well as China's president and vice president.

They will also decide on the premier, vice premiers, state councilors and government ministers.

Deputies will also elect the chairman of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China and heads of the Supreme People's Court and China's prosecuting body, the Supreme People's Procuratorate.

They will hear and deliberate the government work report and examine economic and social development plans, along with central and local budgets.

With the aim of giving grassroots voices, a greater say in China's future.
