A terrorist threat emailed to the Hungarian Olympic Committee was a false alarm, the Hungarian Olympic Committee Director of International Affairs Zsigmond Nagy told local wire service MTI on Wednesday.

The Hungarian Olympic Committee submitted the email, which warned Hungary not to participate in the Sochi Olympic Games that start on February 7, for analysis to the International Olympic Committee (IOC and the organizers in Sochi.

The IOC issued a statement which said: "The IOC takes security very seriously and passes on any credible information to the relevant security services. However, in this case it seems like the email sent to a number of NOCs contains no threat and appears to be a random message from a member of the public."

"Threat described in the email sent to your address is not real," the Sochi Organizing Committee said in a statement.

Based on the official statements released by the IOC and Organizing Committee of the XXII Olympic Winter Games and XI Paralympic Winter Games of 2014 in Sochi, the Hungarian Olympic Committee continues its Olympic preparations and the Olympic Team of Hungary will participate in the XXII Olympic Winter Games, the Hungarian Olympic Committee said in a statement.

On Wednesday morning Hungarian Olympic Committee President Zsolt Borkai reported that the threat had been received. The German, Austrian, Swiss, Italian, and Slovenian Olympic committees received similar threats at the same time.
