The decision of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress for the Legislative Council of HKSAR to continue performing duties was hailed by Tung Chee-hwa, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, as legal and reasonable.

HONG KONG, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Tung Chee-hwa, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said on Tuesday that he fully supports the decision of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) for the sixth Legislative Council (LegCo) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) to continue to discharge duties which is legal and reasonable.

Tung said that the decision, which was passed at the 21st session of the Standing Committee of the 13th NPC on Tuesday, resolved the problem of a lacuna in the legislature arising from the postponement of the LegCo General Election. He believed that people in Hong Kong will support this important decision.

Tung said that the current epidemic situation in Hong Kong remains severe, and the economy needs to be revitalized. He hoped that members of the LegCo will put public health and well-being first and put aside their difference, and perform their duties effectively.

He urged the HKSAR lawmakers to assist in the HKSAR government in reviving the economy and relieving people's hardship, so as to make changes and rebuild Hong Kong.■
