Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Wednesday confirmed the killings of three police officers and one guard from a private security company by an armed attacker.

"I am sending my condolences to the Tanzania Police Force following the deaths of three police officers and one guard from a private security company," President Hassan said on Twitter.

She said the four victims were killed in an attack by an armed assailant at Selander Bridge along the Ali Hassan Mwinyi Road in mid-afternoon in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam.

"The assailant has been controlled and I direct police to undertake full investigation into the incident," said the head of state.

Simon Sirro, Tanzania's police chief, told a local radio station that the assailant was also shot dead by police, adding that police are investigating to establish the nationality of the attacker and his motive.

The attack occurred shortly after president Hassan addressed senior police officers and urged them to beef up the fight against cross-border organized crimes, including terrorism and drug trafficking.
