China slammed the US for "their habitual ignorance and arrogance" on Monday after Washington cast the only "no" vote on a Beijing-sponsored resolution at the UN Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva on Monday.

While rejecting the resolution, US diplomat Jason Mack accused Beijing of trying “to glorify its own idea of mutually beneficial cooperation,” referring to Chinese President Xi Jinping’s “win-win” agenda.

"The remarks of the US official in Geneva do not hold water at all and also reflect their habitual ignorance and arrogance of certain people in the United States as always," China's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying said on Monday.

“Actually, the resolution titled "Promoting Mutually Beneficially Cooperation in the Field of Human Rights" jointly submitted by China and relevant countries to the 37th Session of the UN Human Rights Council was adopted by an overwhelming majority,” she added.

The resolution received 28 "yes" votes after Mack called for a vote and a single "no" vote from the US. Australia, Britain, Japan and Switzerland were among those who abstained.

“All green 'yes' on the electronic board except for only one red 'no' from the US, leaving the US vote so isolated and disturbing. I wonder what the US would explain about this,” the spokesperson remarked.

She reasoned that the resolution was passed by a landslide because it calls upon states “to promote mutually beneficial cooperation in the field of human rights, step up dialogue and cooperation, support the building of a new type of international relations featuring mutual respect, fairness, justice and mutually beneficial cooperation and foster a community with a shared future for mankind.”

Hua said that the international community has reached an important consensus that only through dialogue and cooperation can the human rights cause of all countries be better promoted and protected.

“When making comments [at at the Council’s meeting on Monday], a number of countries said that the China-sponsored resolution gives full expression to the shared aspirations of the international community and will help to increase the say and the agenda-setting right of the developing countries in the field of international human rights and promote the sound development of global human rights cause,” she said.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, however, added that despite the US veto against the resolution, China remains committed “to strengthening communication and exchanges with all sides, including the US, and injecting positive energy into the global human rights cause.”

"Here I would reiterate once again, it has been the overall objective of major country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics to build new international relations in the new era and a community of shared future for mankind. China is willing to work together with all relevant parties in the international community to actively implement the UN resolution mentioned above,” Hua said.

The spat over the human rights resolution adds to the growing tensions between the US and China, which are entangled in what is being dubbed as a “trade war” after US President Donald Trump announced imposing tariffs on Chinese imports worth nearly 60 billion US dollars. Latest reports suggest both countries searching for a resolution to avoid “trade war”.
