At least two Indian Army personnel have been killed and another missing in an avalanche in the northern state of Uttarakhand, a senior police official said Tuesday.

"The incident happened late Monday night when an army check- post at the India-Nepal border in the state's Pithoragarh district was hit by the avalanche, which was triggered by heavy snowfall over the last two days," he said, on condition of anonymity.

While two soldiers died on the spot, one has been missing, the official said, adding that five others in the check-post have been rescued.

Rescue work is underway to find the missing soldier, he said.
