The41-year-oldactorwasthefavouritetowinafterpickingupbothaGoldenGlobeandaBaftaforhisperformance.Thefilm,whichhaswonanumberofawardsatthisyear’sceremony,tellsthetruestoryofHughGlass,whobattledhiswaythroughthewildernessafterbeingleftfordead.

DiCapriobeatoutcompetitionfromlastyear’swinnerEddieRedmayneandMichaelFassbender.HehadpreviouslybeennominatedforhisworkinWhat’sEatingGilbertGrape?,TheAviator,BloodDiamondandTheWolfofWallStreet.
