US President Donald Trump has criticized Attorney General Jeff Sessions during an interview with the New York Times.

Trump said he would not have appointed Sessions if he had known the attorney general would later recuse himself from the Russia investigation.

According to the New York Times, "in an extraordinary denouncement of one of his earliest backers in Washington, Trump said Sessions' decision to recuse himself from all matters related to Russia was 'very unfair to the president.'"

"Sessions should have never recused himself," Trump told the newspaper. "And if he was going to recuse himself he should have told me before he took the job and I would have picked somebody else."

Sessions, an early supporter of Trump, recused himself from the investigation into alleged Russian interference in the US election after it emerged he had met with Russian officials during the presidential campaign but failed to disclose the encounters during his Senate nomination hearing.
