Mauritania cuts ties with Qatar, as Jordan downgrades representation

The West African country of Mauritania has become the latest to cut ties with Qatar over its alleged terrorist links.

"Qatar has worked for the advancement of anarchy and disturbances in a number of the Arab states. Qatar's policy in the region was connected to supporting terrorist organizations and the amplification of extremist ideas," said Mauritania's Foreign Ministry in a statement on Tuesday.

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt have cut off diplomatic relations with Qatar, accusing it of supporting terrorism. Libya, Yemen and the Maldives later took similar action.

Jordan’s information minister also announced earlier on Tuesday that Jordan will downgrade its diplomatic representation with Qatar. Mohammad al Momani, also the government’s official spokesman, added that Jordan has decided to cancel the license of Doha-based TV channel Al Jazeera.
