Light plane crashes near South Stradbroke Island in Australia's Queensland

A light plane has crashed into the sea near South Stradbroke Island, off the Gold Coast, Australia, Queensland Police said on Monday.

The plane crashed into the water at about 12:30 p.m. local time on Monday, police said.

A police search and rescue operation is currently underway with other agencies' assistance, police said.

It is believed that two people were onboard. However, local media reports said it's unclear how many people were onboard and if there are any survivors.

A department of Community Safety spokeswoman told the Australian Associated Press (AAP) that the plane wreckage and fuel have been found at the crash site near the island.

There is no further information at this stage.
