The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAA) has announced the launch of a real-name registry for civilian drones, starting on June 1.

The new rule will apply to all drones over 250 grammes. Owners of drones bought before June 1st are also required to register their personal information before August 31. However, the CAA has yet released the detailed punishment for owners who violate the rule.

The CAA launched the rule to improve the management of drones as civilian drones were often seen flying near airports and have affected the landing and taking-off of planes.

On January 15, a video captured by a drone showed a passenger plane coming into land while the drone was hovering just hundreds of metres away.

According to market research firm IDC, shipments of Chinese civilian drones were estimated at 390,000 units in 2016, and expected to rise to three million by 2019.
