Africa's COVID-19 caseload exceeds 2.49 mark: Africa CDC

The number of COVID-19 infections in Africa surpassed the 2.49 million mark on Sunday as the continent continues to see a steady rise in its caseload.

According to the latest data by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of confirmed cases in Africa stood at 2,490,397 on Sunday with a death toll of 58,762.

South Africa remains to be the hardest-hit country on the continent by the pandemic, having recorded 912,477 cases and 24,539 fatalities.

The country accounts for 36.64 percent of Africa's COVID-19 caseload and 41.76 percent of its deaths.

South Africa's caseload is more than twice as high as the second-highest caseload reported by Morocco.

The North African country has registered 415,226 confirmed cases and 6,909 fatalities.

Other than the two, the only other African countries that have reported more than 100,000 COVID-19 infections are Egypt (124,891), Ethiopia (119,494) and Tunisia (119,151).

A total of 10 countries on the continent have recorded more than 1,000 COVID-19 related fatalities.

The Africa CDC data also showed that 2,094,336 patients had successfully recovered from the disease.
