Hong Kong's Center for Health Protection (CHP) reported two newly confirmed COVID-19 cases on Friday, taking the total cases in China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) to 1,039.
Head of the CHP's Communicable Disease Branch Chuang Shuk-kwan told a press briefing that the two imported cases involved a 16-year-old female student and a 34-year-old man, both of whom returned to Hong Kong from Pakistan on Thursday via a chartered flight arranged by the HKSAR government.
The two asymptomatic patients were sent directly to quarantine centers upon their arrival at the Hong Kong International Airport, and they are now in hospital for treatment, Chuang said.
She urged members of the public to remain alert even though the number of daily cases in Hong Kong remained low.
Emphasizing that the incubation period of the disease is long and there are outbreaks globally, Chuang said the crisis is not over yet and more imported cases are expected in the future.
Hong Kong had reported no new COVID-19 cases for five days in a row starting from April 26.
According to Hong Kong's Hospital Authority, as of Friday noon, a total of 858 COVID-19 patients have been discharged from hospitals upon recovery, while 175 patients are hospitalized, including four in critical condition and three in serious condition.
