A piece of news entitled “Boy chooses Wi-Fi over grandma” has sparked heated debate among Chinese Internet users over how small kids spend their summer vacation.

Local media reported, a nine-year-old boy in southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality refused to spend his summer vacation at his grandma’s house because she didn’t install internet at her home. The boy, nicknamed Tuantuan, spends every summer vacation at the grandma’s. But this time, he denied his dear grandmother, complaining “There is no Wi-FIi and smart phone in grandma’s home, I can’t play video game. It’s too boring.”

The 67-year-old was really upset, saying “I can cook his favorite dishes, such as stewed pork shank, twice cooked pork and soybean past noodles. I can read Chinese myth too. I miss him so much.” She didn’t understand why her grandchild is obsessed by phone and internet.

With the technological progress and the popularity of internet, our major leisure time are occupied by smartphones. Worse still, smartphones also stealing childhood. Nowadays, playing online video game is the only pleasure of some children. Some say these computer-loving kids may miss out the simple outdoor pleasures.

However, the internet was not so developed in the 1980s and 1990s. Simple outdoor games and other ways of amusements are children’s favorites.

1. Chickens vs Eagle

One acts as the eagle, one the hen and the rest the chickens. The game goes like this: the “hen” in the front of the “chickens” spread his/her arms to protect the “chicken”, and every “chicken” grasps the clothes tail of the one right in front of it. The “eagle” should seek every opportunity to catch the “chicken”. If one “chicken” is caught, the “eagle” will win the game.

2. Hopscotch

It’s a playground game in which players jump from one numbered space on the ground to another to retrieve the stone they toss.

3. Hoop pushing

It’s a popular game for the boys who roll large iron hoops along the ground. They must keep the hoops rolling for longer periods of time while running.

4. Rubber band skipping

It’s the game for the girls, which is usually played by three players with a long rope. Players must accomplish a specific series of moves without making an error or pausing.

5. Fly Kite

Flying kite has been a popular outdoor game since Ancient China.

6. Small raccoon crisp instant noodle

The Post-90s generation runs out of their money to small raccoon crisp instant noodles, just for collecting all 108 cards in the bags.

7. Watching animated films and TV series

Black Cat Sheriff

It’s one of the most classic Chinese animations. It’s a story about detective Mr. Black Cat. a brave, decisive and smart cat, solving many tough cases and protecting animals.

Journey to the West

This film is adapted from one of four great classical novels of Chinese literature -- Journey to the West. And Monkey King is the most iconic fictional character in China.

My Fair Princess

The Cinderella-like costume drama, considered as one of most influential Chinese-language series, brought so much laugher to both children and adults. It was even broadcast 13 times within a year by a Chinese TV station.

Young Judge Bao

Young Judge Bao is the most popular detective drama in China.

Whether say it aloud or not, people fondly remember their childhood.
