China's top legislator Zhang Dejiang on Tuesday called for stability, development and harmony in Hong Kong and Macao.

Zhang, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, made the remarks while participating in a panel discussion with political advisors from Hong Kong and Macao at the ongoing annual session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, the country's top political advisory body.

Hong Kong and Macao should promote all-round and coordinated social and economic development while adhering to the "one country, two systems" principle, well combining the one country principle with due respect for the difference of the two systems, he said.

The two regions must observe regulations of the Constitution and the Basic Laws in seeking democracy, the top legislator said.

Hong Kong and Macao should seek development through improving their own competitiveness and the support of the Chinese mainland, he added.

He also encouraged the political advisors of the two regions to actively participate in the administration and discussion of state affairs to promote better development and prosperity of China as a whole.
