Chinese President Xi Jinping urged the international community to commit to promoting peace and talks when dealing with the Ukraine crisis, calling to "create conditions" for a political settlement of the matter.

China is willing to continue playing a constructive role on this issue, Xi said on Friday afternoon during a phone conversation with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of ambassadorial diplomatic relations between the two countries. President Xi admitted China-Britain ties have gone through "ups and downs, but overall are under continuous development."

China and Britain observe different basic situations, and share different development paths, Xi pointed out, calling for strengthening dialogues and win-win cooperation with an open heart.

On his part, Johnson hailed the importance of the bilateral ties. The number of Chinese international students in the UK is more than any other European countries, and the UK is proud of that, he said.

The UK leader told Xi that the two countries can cooperate on many fronts given their mutual interests in many areas, especially trade, climate changes, and bio-diversity.
