Last week, a city in India, Bhopal found an innovative way of punishing riders who were violating traffic rules, by making them write a 100-word essay on the significance of protective gear for riders.

The action was taken particularly against those who were seen ignoring wearing helmets, which is mandatory under traffic rules.

In six days, the traffic police made around 150 riders write the essays, also asking them to explain their reason for not wearing helmets. It was a weeklong initiative, to promote road safety among people.

A media report quoted Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Pradeep Chouhan informing, “During the on-going Road Safety Week, riders of two-wheelers found without a helmet are being told to write an essay in 100 words to explain as to why they were violating this necessary safety norm.”

To promote road safety and spread awareness, rallies were taken out and pamphlets were also distributed in the province of Madhya Pradesh. Eye check up camps for auto drivers were later organized.
