The mainland and Taiwan should further cooperation in the flat panel industry and upgrade technology in more fields of the industry, said Bai Weimin, vice head of the mainland's China Video Industry Association on Friday.

Visiting the island at the invitation of Wang Chih-kang, chairman of Taiwan's external trade development association, Bai made the remarks at a symposium on cross-Strait display industry cooperation Computex Taipei, the biggest computer expo in Asia which opened on Tuesday.

Mainland buyers will spend 4.5 billion U.S. Dollars on 27 million Taiwan-made panels this year, focusing on super high definition and large-sized screens, said Bai.

Wang said that more communication and cooperation should be made across the Strait so as to set up a common industry standard.

"The mainland has become the largest market of high definition TV screens with Taiwan as the backup, and the two sides should further their cooperation in both amount and quality," said Wang.

He also appealed to the mainland to accelerate its step to establish the standard of 4K resolution panels in order to boost cross-Strait cooperation.

Bai has been in Taiwan for panel purchase since 2009,while this year is the first time that Bai will purchase panels from the computer expo.

The five-day computer show will feature more than 1,700 exhibitors and attract more than 130,000 buyers from the island and overseas.
