One soldier and one policeman were killed on Sunday in clashes with Kurdistan workers' Party ( PKK) in the district of Cizre in Sirnak province, the Turkish General Staff stated on Sunday.

Turkish security forces were attacked by PKK militants in an operation to clean the trenches set by PKK militants in Cizre.

A soldier and a policeman were injured and later died in hospital on Sunday, said a statement released by Turkish General Staff on its website, adding that three PKK militants were killed after Turkish forces fighted back.

Since early December last year, more than 240 members of the security forces and thousands of PKK militants have been killed due to clashes across Turkey and northern Iraq.

The PKK, considered as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union, resumed its armed campaign against the Turkish government in late July 2015.
