Belgium has recorded a total of 6,262 COVID-19 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the figures released by health authorities on Wednesday.
Altogether 266 new deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours, among which 87 occurred in hospitals and 178 in care homes and facilities.
In the last 24 hours, 933 new infections have been confirmed in Belgium, bringing the cumulative number to 41,889.
Despite a rebound in the number of new deaths on Wednesday, Steven Van Gucht, spokesman for the crisis center, said "the peak of deaths is behind us."
Wednesday's increase in the figures is due to the fact that deaths in nursing homes are reported late: "Sometimes they come back to us several days late, sometimes even a week late," he added.
Meanwhile, a group of ten experts constituting the "Team Exit" called for a relaxing plan in three stages and with possible backtracking, according to a report of the experts quoted by Belgian newspaper Le Soir on Wednesday.
Belgium's National Security Council, which decided on the lockdown measures to contain the new coronavirus as well as their extensions until May 3, is scheduled to meet on Friday to discuss possible de-confinement measures.
