**NEW DELHI, August 18 (APD) ** -- Following National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) ban on plastic bags, the Delhi government has decided to crack down on plastics from Thursday.
On Wednesday the chief secretary held a meeting with civic bodies, including the Delhi Pollution Control Committee, Delhi Cantonment Board and the New Delhi Municipal Council.
A senior official of the state environment department informed, “The agencies were directed to take actions in phases and seize all plastics from the market which are less than 50 microns in thickness. They have been asked to submit the first action taken report by Friday. In the first phase, the plastic stock of vendors and shop keepers would be seized.”
Since Thursday the civic bodies and the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) seized about 200 kilograms of plastic bags. The South Delhi civic body collected Rs 75,000 as fine from vendors and traders.
The drive would continue and the agencies would submit their Action Taken Report to the Delhi Pollution Control Committee after a week.
Plastic manufacturers have stressed that civic agencies should carry better tools to prove that the plastic is below 50 microns. Following the demand, the NDMC is planning to purchase screw gauges.
“We know how to identify plastic less than 50 micros. But we would still carry screw gauges to measure the width,” said an official of north Delhi civic body.
