Nearly 200 Chinese mothers staged a flash mob on a beach in Fuzhou, Fujian Province on Saturday to promote breastfeeding.

The flash mob was held on the National Breastfeeding Awareness Day and was arranged by the Fujian Breastfeeding Association, a nongovernmental organisation - this is the fourth such flash mob organised by the NGO since 2014.

Founded in 2011, the 10,000 member organisation has been promoting breastfeeding and providing breastfeeding guidance for young parents in Fujian.

Research shows that it is crucial for mothers to breastfeed babies in the first six months.

However, the National Health and Family Planning Commission's 2014 report showed that only 27.8 percent of Chinese mothers nursed babies under six months, much lower than the 38 percent world average.

Last year, 36 women from around the world staged a similar flash mob in Shanghai to promote breastfeeding during annual World Breastfeeding Week (August 1-7).
