Hong Kong to raise tourist capacity: chief executive

Hong Kong is striving to raise its capacity to receive tourists, the city's Chief Executive C Y Leung said here on Thursday.

In the Legislative Council question and answer session on Thursday, Leung said while tourism has contributed greatly to the local economy, the tourist influx might affect Hong Kong people's daily lives.

The city's government plans to build more infrastructure in places that are not known as tourist areas, to strike a balance between tourism development and community needs, he said.

These include two hotel sites slated for the north commercial district next to the airport on Lantau Island, and a plan to build hotels and shopping malls on the artificial island for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities, Leung added.
