EU executive proposes climate law, targets zero emission by 2050

The European Commission introduced the European Climate Law on Wednesday, aiming to set a legally binding target of net zero greenhouse gas emission by 2050 into legislation.

The legislation marks a move by the leadership of the European Union (EU) executive arm to use legally binding means to bound EU institutions and member states to take necessary measures to meet the target.

It is not surprising, however, as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and others in the leadership have vowed to put political commitment into legislation.

Von der Leyen said in a press release that "We are acting today to make the EU the world's first climate neutral continent by 2050. The Climate Law is the legal translation of our political commitment, and sets us irreversibly on the path to a more sustainable future."
