Vietnam and Laos pledged to closely coordinate with each other as well as with other countries and organizations in the management and sustainable use of water in the Mekong River, said Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang on Tuesday.

Quang made the remark while holding talks with General Secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP) and President of Laos Bounnhang Vorachit in capital Hanoi on Tuesday.

Mekong River originates in China and runs through Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. It is known as Lancang in the Chinese stretch. Vietnam has asked China to discharge more water from the hydropower station in southwest China's Yunnan Province to help overcome drought in the Mekong Delta.

At the request of downstream countries, China discharged water from the Jinghong Hydropower Station in Yunnan Province to help.

At the talks, Quang also extended his gratitude to Lao party, state and people in supporting Vietnamese people in provinces which are hit by drought and saltwater intrusion in the Mekong Delta and Central Highlands region.

This illustrates close relations and special solidarity between Vietnam and Laos, the state-run radio VOV quoted Quang as saying.

Bounnhang Vorachit, for his part, said that in any situation, Laos-Vietnam relations have always enjoyed strong developments in all areas of politics, economics, society, security and defense.

Lao party, state and people vow to do their best to work with Vietnamese side to nurture and boost the traditional friendship and special solidarity between the two countries.

At the talks, Quang and Vorachit discussed ways to enhance Vietnam-Laos ties in the coming time as well as promote collaboration to effectively implement high-level agreements, reported VOV.

Vietnam and Laos established diplomatic ties in 1962.

At the invitation of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Nguyen Phu Trong and Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang, Bounnhang Vorachit is touring Vietnam from Monday to Wednesday.
