Since last week UN and German Chancellor Angela Merkel both brought up the issue of Kashmir back to attention.

The UN on Tuesday spoke about the situation in Kashmir, and urged the Indian government to restore the rights of the people living there.

Security limitations continue to be imposed there since August 5, when the announcement to divide the former province of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories was made.

Article 370 of the constitution that gave special rights to the former province was also revoked in early August.

About Kashmir, Rupert Colville, Spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said, “We are extremely concerned that the population In Kashmir continues to be deprived of a wide range of human rights and we urge the Indian authorities to unlock the situation and fully restore the rights that are currently being denied."

Later on Friday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke about Kashmir with concern. The comments were made after India and Germany decided to work together to combat terrorism.

Speaking to German journalists who had visited Delhi, he said, "The situation now for the people in Kashmir is not good and not sustainable. This has to be improved for sure."
