Iran has won "a legal battle" to abort a U.S. attempt to block and confiscate Iran's funds in Europe, Governor of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) Abdolnaser Hemmati said on Wednesday.

The courts in Luxembourg have revoked a dispute over 1.6 billion-U.S.-dollar Iranian funds hold by Clearstream, a securities depository, which Washington had sought to block and confiscate, Hemmati was quoted a saying by Press TV.

"Through CBI's legal follow-up, the U.S. attempt to have CBI's funds in Europe confiscated and transferred (to Washington) was nullified," said Hemmati.

The attempt by the United States was under the pretext of U.S. plaintiffs to seize CBI asset to pay for the damage in "Sept. 11 attacks," for which Washington had blamed Iran. The Islamic republic has rejected the charges.
