Burkina Faso soldiers who declared a coup on Thursday after arresting the interim president and his cabinet on Wednesday, have promised to hold "wide-ranging talks" to form a government that will organize "inclusive and peaceful elections."

"Today, Sept. 17, 2015, the patriotic and democratic forces comprising of all national army units, operating under the banner of the National Council for Democracy (CND), have decided to remove the deviant transition government," the group's spokesman said on national television.

"Set up following the popular uprising of Oct. 30 to 31, 2014, the transition regime has progressively abandoned the objectives for which it was formed," the coup plotters said.

"The electoral law which has been condemned by many legal professionals, has become a tool for negation of our people's values, founded on the spirit of justice, fairness and tolerance," the statement continued.

They noted that the main objective of CND's intervention was to guarantee "a coherent, just and balanced" process that will lead to establishment of a robust institutional system.

"Anchored on cardinal principles of democracy such as equality before the law, freedom of expression and political change, this institutional system will be the basis for Burkina Faso's socioeconomic development," the statement added.

To achieve this objective, the coup plotters said they had immediately stripped the transition president of his functions and dissolved both the transition government and the National Transition Council.

Meanwhile, Burkina Faso soldiers who carried out the coup have announced a dusk to dawn curfew and closed the country's borders until further notice.

The curfew was imposed between 7:00 p.m. local time until 6:00 a.m.local time. Both aerial and land borders have been closed.

Reports indicated that power had been taken over by Gen. Gilbert Diendere, an influential member of the Presidential Security Regiment, and a former chief of staff of the Burkina Faso presidency.

A former opposition chief and one of the presidential candidates in the Oct. 11 presidential elections condemned the coup announced on Thursday by soldiers of the former presidential guard of ex-president Blaise Compaore, who also arrested the transition president and members of his cabinet on Wednesday.

Veteran opposition leader Zephirin Diabre of the Union for Progress and Change (UPC) urged his party's members and supporters as well as all Burkina Faso people to stand up and defend democracy and rule of law. UPC further called for immediate restoration of constitutional order and republican legality. Enditem
