Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived at a Moscow airport to pay tribute to slain Russian ambassador Andrey Karlov late on Tuesday (Dec 20).
A casket with Karlov's body was flown in from the Turkish capital, Ankara, one day after he was shot dead by an off-duty police officer at an art gallery.
Lavrov, along with Karlov's widow Marina Karlova and the diplomat's mother, followed the casket draped with Russia's national flag which was carried by honor guards as somber music played.
Turkish police detained six people over the killing of the ambassador, Turkish state media said on Tuesday, widening a probe to relatives of the policeman, who shouted "Don't forget Aleppo!" as he gunned Karlov down.
Turkey identified the killer as 22-year-old Mevlut Mert Altintas, who had worked for the Ankara riot police for 2-1/2 years. Altintas was killed minutes later by members of Turkey's special forces.
Russian media reported that a church service for Karlov will be held in Moscow's main Christ the Savior cathedral and led by the head of Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill.
