Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City has proposed the country's Ministry of Public Security and Ministry of Transport to issue regulations on punishing fake helmet wearers, the municipal authorities said Tuesday.

Motorbike riders wear cheap or fashionable helmets which do not meet safety standards will be liable to be fined according to the new regulation, said Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee.

The city's police and other relevant agencies have recently fined 47 fake helmet producers and traders, and confiscated 12,546 helmets. They have also fined over 200,000 motorbike riders who did not wear helmets or wore helmets in improper ways.

Wearing helmets while sitting on motorbikes is compulsory in Vietnam, and local police will fine those who do not wear helmets or wear them but do not fasten their straps.
